Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs representations of age using the following:
• Camera shots, angles, movement and composition
At the scene where Paul is telling Amy to leave, the camera angle goes up to look at Paul to show that he is the older one, the man of the house, it also makes him look really big and tall. However the camera angle that shows Amy speaking is slightly pointing downwards and it shows the massive size of Paul next to her, making her seem powerless and really small and young.
Also when Amy starts the car there there is a camera movement around Amy to show what she is doing, but she isn't completely sure what she is doing so it shows her young age as she isn't sure how to start the car properly.
• Editing
When Paul starts talking to Edward Green in the office, the isn't a lot of quick editing from shot to shot, the film spends longer on each individual angle, the movement is slow which reflects the old aged adults talking, but when Paul comes out and talks to Amy there is sudden quick movement and the camera angles changes a lot, so there is a lot of editing put into this to make sure its quick and snappy which shows that Paul is talking to the younger people as they tend to be full of energy and move around quickly unlike old slow adults.
• Sound
When Paul is talking to Edward green he speaks quietly and calmly like with an adult but when he starts talking to Amy he is more sharp and he talks much quicker. This shows representation of age as he talks much quicker with the younger people. He also talks to the older person politely and with long fancy words like 'reimburse' but when he starts to talk to Amy he uses simple English words that any young person would know the meanings of, and he is really not polite with her and uses words like 'damn' because he doesn't have a lot of respect for her as she is really young.
• Mise-en-scene
The mise en scene represents age, as all of the old characters are wearing jackets, coats, checkered shirts and plain dirty trousers. This shows they have been working there a lot in their old lifetime because of their old dirty clothes. The younger characters are wearing t-shirts, hoodies and jeans, which are all clean and look almost new which shows that they haven't been working there for a very long time as they are really young, this is an old dirty farm so they would get really dirty even if they did a little bit of work.
